About the Event

On the Mend;

A writing workshop for women working through their own healing

Wellness has become one of those words that is synonymous with everything but it's meaning. It's been so deeply wrapped up in capitalism, and is now often packaged and resold to us, watered down and without its power. But where do women who want to, or are trying to heal, go when wellness is now an esthetic, and not serving us as our birth right? We write. Maud Alcorn is an author and a poet, but before she ever wrote for the consumption of others, she wrote her way out of despair, loneliness, and a state of being broken. 'On the Mend' will explore what it means to write, not for others to experience or feel, but to find our own way as we take on the task of healing ourselves, through our own words. This writing workshop will not focus on the outcome of writing, but the action of, and how we can heal ourselves through it. Through group and individual writing activities, Maud will assist attendees in going beyond sentences and words, and finding ways to understand our own needs, wants, and desires when it comes to our own wellness.

Maud Alcorn:

Maud Alcorn is an author, spoken word artist, and event curator hailing from Oakland, California. She entered the scene as a spoken word artist in 2017, and has grown exponentially since. She has been featured at various events, festivals, and showcases throughout the Bay Area lik the Oakland Peace Festival, MoAD’s Open Mic, and the Black Arts Retreat. She has facilitated writing workshops for colleges & organizations like The Wing, Mills College, University of California San Francisco, that surround her experience as a queer Black woman invested in the healing of herself, and her community. She is also the co-founder of ‘Gold Beams’, an organization that curates and hosts eclectic events for Black creatives, including their signature event ‘Second Mondays’ that is an open mic for black artists of all mediums. Maud’s vision has always been to use her talents and own lived experiences to continue to build, bridge, and be community.
